This workshop continues our exploration of design, and establishes additional standards for technical knowledge and classroom procedures required for this course. During the workshop, you will revise your Profile document from Workshop 1 (if necessary), implement that document into a 30-second screencast video, upload that video to Screencast.com, add the URL for that video back into your profile, and then post the revised version of that document to Dropbox and to the Discussion forum for the workshop that I have provided in SVSU Canvas.
This workshop requires you to complete and submit a revised Profile document that includes a link to the screencast video you record. After posting your Profile in the designated Canvas Discussion forum, you engage in discussion with peers in that same space. The processes involved in completing these tasks demonstrate some of the core processes for the course. Each of the stages described here sets a standard for work for the semester.
During this workshop, you will complete 5 tasks.
You should have already set up an account at Screencast.com while completing the Week One Checklist (see Canvas Files: Course Docs). If you have not yet completed that task, do so now before you continue this workshop.
Review your profile and the specifications detailed in the Document Design workshop. Make sure your profile meets expectations. If it does not match the standards provided, then revise your profile prior to recording your screencast.
Finally, (re)watch the workshop video and review the 2 sample profiles (Draft and Final versions) that I provided to you to assist with your work here. See Canvas Files: Workshop Support.
Hint. If your profile document does not match the formatting of the sample document provided to guide your work during the Document Design workshop, then you will not earn full points for this workshop.
Record a brief (30 second) screencast (video tour) of your professional profile. To do so, follow this procedure.
I recommend that you use Techsmith Capture, Loom, Inc. Loom, or Screencast-O-matic.com (all platforms), or Apple Quicktime (Mac) to record your video. All of these are free tools. Note that Capture is an app embedded in the interface of your account at Screencast.com.
You may also consider Techsmith SnagIt or Camtasia. If you have access to either of these packages, I recommend that you opt for one of those tools as your first choice.
Whatever tool you choose, store your video on Screencast.com, and follow the procedures in this workshop for sharing that video with peers.
Note: Both Screencast-O-matic.com and Loom offer streaming from their own host sites. You may take advantage of these if you choose those apps to record in. The only thing I do not want to see is for you to post MP4 files in Dropbox, Canvas, or elsewhere that is not a streaming service.
To prepare your final (revised) profile, you need to provide audience members a link to the video file on your Screencast.com account. To do so, follow these steps.
Locate the forum for this workshop in Canvas Discussions. Post a note that invites your classmates to read the profile and view the embedded screencast video. Attach your final profile document to that note. Do not place the share link to your video in your post.
Add the final profile document to the Workshops folder on Dropbox.com.
View the videos for all of your classmates. For discussion, you need only engage 2 people in conversation, but I want you to begin familiarizing yourself with the whole class.
After viewing the videos, ask 2 classmates 3 follow-up questions.
Note. Seek out classmates who have not yet been asked questions by 2 classmates. That way, if everyone participates, each of you should get asked questions by someone else in the class.
Respond to the questions you are asked. If you do not get asked questions by 2 classmates, I will not hold you accountable.
Post your final profile to the Workshops folder on your shared class space on Dropbox.com. Post that same file in the Canvas Discussion forum dedicated to this workshop, as has been detailed above.
