Workshop / Working with Audio, Part 1

This workshop focuses on the technical and content elements of editing audio files. In it, you will create a coherent instruction set from a scrambled audio file and a selection of royalty-free theme music.

Workshop Objectives

Submission Checklist

Workshop Details

This workshop requires you to edit an audio file that I have deliberately recorded with the content out of sequence. You must complete 2 tasks: unscramble the content using basic audio editing processes; and add theme music (both an intro stream and an end stream) from a collection of royalty-free tracks.

Prepare for the Workshop

I provide 3 files through SVSU Canvas to support your work on this assignment. The first is an mp3 file that includes a brief overview of the workshop, and then presents content in scrambled order. The second file provides links to instructional videos that introduce tools from and strategies for Adobe Audition, the audio editing package that we use as our standard this semester. The final file provides links to 3 source site for royalty-free music. If you are already familiar with Adobe Audition, you are free to invest only the time you need to reacquaint yourself with that package.

Once you feel ready to begin editing, I recommend that you listen to the workshop podcast file (mp3) and then search for some royalty-free music.

Note. You do not have to draw your theme music from the sources I provide. However, you must use music that is either royalty free or that you recorded (and to which you also hold the copyright).

Note. You only need 1 or 2 segments of the song you select. You may use the same 10-15 second segment for both the intro and the outro for your submission, or you may use different segments. Whatever you decide, import the file into your session in Adobe Audition, and then edit the song file down to the bit(s) you want.

Complete the Workshop

When you set up to work in Adobe Audition, create a new Multitrack Session file. Because you will only edit existing content, you will not need to change any hardware settings in preferences for recording. However, working in a multitrack session file makes the process of adding theme music and sound effects much easier. Import the workshop mp3 file into Track 1, and import your music file into Track 2.

If you listened to the workshop podcast, you know that the work itself is relatively straightforward. It requires that you complete the following tasks.

When you name your file for submission, follow this pattern: Lastname_WorkingWithAudio1.mp3.

Submission Guidelines

Post your submission to the forum dedicated to this workshop on Canvas Discussions. Add a brief introduction where you identify your theme music by song and source. For example, my class videos use the track "Hubbub" from Purple-Planet.com. Attach your edited mp3 to your post.

Evaluation Standards

This section describes the standards by which your work will be evaluated for this workshop. Attend carefully to these details. If you do so, you will earn full credit for the workshop.

Evaluation Summary

There are 50 possible points for this workshop. I will award points according to this standard.
