Project 1: Symposium Booklet:

Objective

This project will help students build their InDesign page layout skills by challenging students to orchestrate complex amounts of primary and secondary information.

With this many pages the use of character styles and paragraph styles becomes a necessity.

Overview

Create the interior pages of a full color booklet that uses all of the supplied text.

(Page sizes: 40 x 51 picas, horizontal or vertical layout is fine). Design the pages into a conference booklet based on chosen theme. Be alert to your layout choices, making sure you maintain an excellent balance and hierarchy.

Research/Development Work Due

(Download and complete Concept Sheet) Use that document to write out a concept for your Symposium Book, identify the specific design style that will reflect a science conference theme. Render 15 thumbnail sketches (a spread = 1 sketch) planing your layout arrangement.

Grading will be based upon students composition of individual pages, experimentation of layout choices, ability to follow instructions and craftsmanship/presentation. Key to this assignment is arranging the primary and supporting text. Illustrations and display type should not be used.

Final Work Due

A PDF of the complete symposium booklet. Place on the Project Server: the multi-page PDF file of the finished design. The file needs to be named (in this order): the student’s lastname-SymposiumBook.

Focus Design Principle(s)
